Plumber working on a gas oven connection

What does a gas fitter work on?

Gas work splits into three groups, and each carries its own checks:

Installs and changeovers

Cooktops, ovens, freestanding stoves, wall and space heaters, BBQ bayonet points, pool heaters.

Repairs

Appliances that won't light, pilot faults, leaking connections, old fittings swapped for compliant ones.

Testing and safety

Pressure tests on new lines, detector sweeps on old ones, and gas hot water systems through the hot water hub.

Old Lines, Heaters and the Student Flats

Old heaters work hard in the older housing

Weatherboard and fibro homes still line these streets, and the wall heaters fitted mid last century keep burning in plenty of them. A heater of that age gets a flue and connection check before anything else, because the pipe it sits on has been in the ground nearly as long as the house.

Student units bring their own gas list

Newer apartment blocks for students at the University of Newcastle sit among the older homes, and those units ask for bayonet points, cooktop swaps between leases and heater checks at turnover. Small jobs, but they still go through a licensed fitter and a proper test.

From booking to a tested gas line

Every gas job, big or small, runs the same four steps:

  1. 1

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 1093 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 2

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 3

    The work, then the test

Fittings go in, the line is pressure-tested, and a detector sweep confirms no leaks before the gas is restored to the appliance.

  4. 4

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

How is a gas job priced?

"Not only all of that but the job came in right on quote." Steve

The quote is built from four parts:

  • The appliance and its connection A bayonet point is a smaller job than a heater flue through an external wall; cooktops and ovens each bring their own fitting work.
  • The pipe run How far the new line travels and what it passes through. Houses built before the war were not planned with gas points in mind, so the route can add work.
  • Parts and fittings Regulators, bayonets and flue components vary by appliance, and the quote carries them from the start.
  • The clock Night and weekend work is charged at the after-hours rate, which is stated up front.

We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead. That means the number you hear on the day is the number on the invoice, parts included.

Calls that belong to another trade

When we're not the right call

the meter and the supply pipe from the street are the gas network's equipment, and their emergency line handles faults there. Our work starts where their pipe passes into yours.

Anything electrical belongs to a licensed electrician

A heater with a failed fan or a circuit fault needs the sparky, and handing you the right trade saves quoting the job twice.

Straight answers on the gas side

Do you install gas cooktops in older Jesmond kitchens?

Yes, and the age of the kitchen is exactly what we look at first. An original copper or galvanised run gets checked before a new cooktop goes on it, because a modern unit asks more of the line than the old one did. Worn sections get replaced in the same visit.

Can you add a bayonet point for a BBQ?

Yes. It is a small, fixed-quote job: a line to the wall or patio, a quick-connect fitting and a leak test on everything we touched. The quote covers the drilling, the fitting and the testing together, so nothing gets added later.

My wall heater smells faintly when it starts. Is that urgent?

A faint smell at start-up can be dust burning off, but any gas smell that lingers gets treated as urgent. Open windows, keep clear of switches, and if it strengthens get everyone outside and call the network's emergency number, then us for the repair.

Do you do gas work in rentals near the university?

Yes. Tenants can ring direct, and the owner or agent receives a record of the finished work with photos and a line-by-line invoice. Heaters in older rentals get a safety check while we are on site, which keeps the next inspection simple.
