Why is the drain backing up?

A backed-up drain usually comes down to one of four faults:

Roots in the joints

The older lines are earthenware or clay, and a cracked joint is an open door to a street tree.

Fat and sludge

Kitchen lines choke slowly over years, then close on a busy night.

Storm overload

Heavy rain can outrun the street pits, and low-lying drains push back toward the house.

A collapsed section

A pipe that has shifted or squashed needs repair, not just a clear.

Jesmond Drain Services

Every drain job runs through one of these six doors:

CCTV Drain Inspection

Where it sits and what it is. On footage you can watch with us: drain camera inspection.

Drain Jetting

Water, not chemicals. High-pressure flow strips the whole pipe wall, leaving it clean instead of just poking a channel through the clog: drain jetting visits.

Blocked Sewer

Every fixture at once. When the whole house stops draining at the same time, the sewer line is the usual culprit: blocked sewer clearing.

Stormwater Drains

Rain with nowhere to go. Overflowing pits and water lying in the yard long after a storm: stormwater drain clears.

Pipe Relining

Repair without the trench. A liner is cured inside the old pipe, so the garden stays as it was: pipe relining quote.

Tree Root Removal

Roots out, entry point found. A cutting head clears the growth and the camera finds the joint it came through: tree root clearing.

How does a clear actually run?

From the first look to the final check, a drain job runs in four moves:

Map the line

The pipe locator traces where the drain runs and the camera shows what is sitting in it.

Match the tool

A jetter for grease and sludge, the electric eel for roots and solid obstructions.

Clear the blockage

The roots or sludge get cut out or flushed from inside the line, and the water goes down.

Check it on camera

A camera run after the clear confirms the line flows, and the footage shows whether a repair is next.

What changes the figure on a drain job?

"… clear our blocked drains right through to installation of new sewerage lines. Prompt and efficient service by everyone involved" Ian

Access moves the figure more than anything else: a clean-out in the yard is a quicker job than one under a floor. After that:

  • how far down the line the blockage sits
  • the material the line is built from, since clay, PVC and galvanised each take a different tool
  • whether roots need the eel or a jetter will hold
  • the camera runs before and after the clear

We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead. The figure you sign off on is the one you pay at the end, so a drain job never grows a tail mid-repair. Ian's job is what that looks like in practice:

What the old village left in the ground

The lines are original

Settlement here began in the 1880s, and the post-war brick-veneer and fibro wave built straight over drainage that was already decades old. Earthenware from that era cracks as the reactive clay underneath moves with the seasons.

The trees are mature

Established street trees and gardens on the older blocks sit close over the old lines, and roots push into every crack the clay develops.

The creek sets the schedule

Every drain in the suburb runs toward Dark Creek eventually, and when a big storm dumps faster than the street pits can move it, the overflow lands in low-lying yards around the shops. The stormwater page covers the property side of that.

Where our work stops and Hunter Water's starts

When we're not the right call. A blockage in the main under the road belongs to Hunter Water, and a surcharged public main during a flooded street is theirs too. We hand over the fault details so the report happens fast, then take everything from your boundary inward. A backed-up sewer at 2am is an emergency plumber call rather than a drain booking.

Drain questions from Jesmond households

Can you clear a blocked drain in an old Jesmond house without digging?

Most of the time, yes. The camera finds the blockage first, then the jetter or the eel clears it through the closest opening. When the line itself is cracked, relining repairs it from inside the pipe, so the garden and the driveway stay as they were.

How do I tell a blocked sewer from blocked stormwater?

A sewer blockage shows inside the house: toilets gurgle, drains slow down and every fixture can stop at once. Stormwater shows outside: pits spill over and the ground stays wet days after rain. In a Dark Creek storm the two often arrive together, so we check both lines.

Do you clear drains in the student rentals near the university?

We do, in single rentals and full unit blocks alike. The tenant rings direct and gets a heads-up message while the van is on its way, and the managing agent gets the invoice with before-and-after photos attached, which keeps the paperwork straight on both ends.

Does jetting or the eel damage old clay pipes?

Not when the line is inspected first. The camera run shows the pipe's condition first, jetting pressure gets matched to what the pipe can take, and the eel is reserved for lines that will hold it. The after-check confirms nothing moved.
